A New Chapter: Pursuing a PhD in Nutrition Sciences at NC State University

I’m excited to share a personal and professional milestone! I’ve been accepted into the Nutrition Sciences PhD program at North Carolina State University, where I’ll begin my doctoral studies.

Finding the Right Path

Over the past several years, I’ve spent considerable time exploring different directions for my career. From physician assistant programs to the Doctor of Clinical Nutrition and PhD pathways, I wanted to make an intentional decision about how to continue my education while balancing my professional goals and personal life.

Ultimately, I found myself drawn to research and the opportunity to contribute to the scientific evidence that informs nutrition care.

Why Nutrition Research?

My experiences as a registered dietitian have shaped my interest in understanding how nutrition can support health and prevent chronic disease.

Although chronic diseases affect individuals across all populations, certain communities experience a disproportionate burden due to barriers involving healthcare access, financial resources, and other social and structural factors.

I’m also particularly interested in individuals living with complex medical conditions (like dysautonomia, EDS/HSD and MCAS), including those whose needs may be underrepresented in existing research.

Through doctoral training, I hope to strengthen my skills in research design, scientific inquiry, and translating research findings into practical approaches that improve health outcomes.

What’s Next?

Beginning next year, I’ll pursue doctoral studies in Nutrition Sciences: Human Nutrition and Metabolism, with research interests pertaining to chronic disease prevention.

I’ll also continue my work as Director of the Eagle Nutrition Clinic at North Carolina Central University, where I have the opportunity to provide nutrition care, support community outreach, and participate in research initiatives.

As I celebrated another birthday, I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to continue growing professionally while pursuing work that is meaningful to me.

I also want to express my gratitude to those who took the time to mentor me and help guide me in my decision-making to ultimately pursue this PhD path. I could not have done this alone.

I’m looking forward to this next chapter and the opportunities to learn, collaborate, and contribute to nutrition science!

Thanks for reading x

Crystal
