When It Comes to Weight Loss

Weight management in practice is complex.

When it comes to discussions around weight loss, the tide does seem to be shifting. Yet the pressure remains. The emphasis on physical appearance over metabolic health still lingers.

After watching the new America’s Next Top Model documentary, I finally decided to write this article. It has been on my mind for quite some time. Watching the documentary brought back many memories. While I was never on the show, I did spend time in the modeling industry. I signed with Wilhelmina Models at age 17 and worked on and off as a model into my mid-20s.

The pressures within that industry were palpable. Very quickly, I realized it was not something I wanted to pursue long term. Fortunately, I never developed an eating disorder. However, that is not the case for many individuals in the modeling world — and certainly not for many outside of it.

While culture has evolved since that show, social media continues to reinforce many of the same messages.


What Weight Loss Actually Means

The concept of weight loss is often oversimplified. A person steps on the scale and sees a lower number. A person looks in the mirror and appears “skinnier.” But physiologically, it is far more complex.
